Description

We offer raw green unroasted coffee beans for the home roaster who enjoys roasting their own coffee beans at home. Unroasted coffee beans must be roasted prior to use for brewing. Roasting coffee can be a very simple process, or it can be a real work of art created by an experienced artisan. The roasting process has always been a mysterious kind of thing considered to be a closely guarded process of proprietary roasting profiles kept only for the privileged artisans “in the know” with sophisticated commercial roasting equipment. In recent years this has changed substantially with the new wave of home coffee roasters trying their hand at the roasting craft. They have learned many of the tricks of time and temperature modulating their own flavor profiles creating their own works of art in the cup. Coffee is a universal drink loved by many people, some for-taste others seeking the caffeine but when you roast it at home it takes on a whole new appeal. Your coffee quest becomes an intensely personal adventure where you are in control of many aspects of taste results. Roasting is truly a rewarding experience where the more experience you get the better your coffee tastes. Basically, you heat the beans to around 400F to 450F in about 10-15 minutes time period. Once the beans reach your desired doneness or “brown” simply remove them from the heat and cool to room temperature as quickly as possible. After this you can use them to brew coffee! When you buy our beans, you can rest assured that you are getting fresh current crop beans from some of the best coffee plantations in the world. We believe that the best taste comes from premium high-altitude growing regions. We source our beans with great care, ensuring that the farmers are paid fairly for their time and product. When you buy our beans, you are supporting the communities in which beans were grown ensuring equity for all. Invest in our premium high-quality beans, taking your roasting experience to the next level!

  • Home Roast Newbie...
This is the first bean I have ever roasted so take this review with that in mind. I use a Fresh Roast 500. I have roasted about 4lbs so far, I've made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot roasting this coffee. What I can say is no matter what roast I've tried Full City, Cull City + or a darker Espresso Roast the coffer is very mild. I like the flavor but it is not a strong coffee. The Espresso roast brewed in a Breville Espresso machine is my favorite of all I've roasted. It is mild but chocolatey. Very smooth and if that was the only coffee I drank I would use this bean every time. I use a temperature probe and stop this roast at about 460deg or 30-35sec into 2nd crack. The Full City and Full City + was roasted for Pour overs or standard drip. Again both are mild and smooth but a touch weak if brewed like I normally brew coffee. I have a 12oz Yeti I do pour overs in for work and I need at least 3 large tablespoons in not 4 to make a cup that doesn't taste like flavored water. But when I get it strong enough it is a very good cup. I still haven't been able to get a drip brew strong enough they all taste watered down. I roast the full city to about 435 and the full city + to about 445. Give or take a few degrees. Full city right at or just before 2nd and + about 20 seconds into 2nd. My biggest problem is consistency but since this is the only bean I've roasted I can't tell if it is the bean or the Fresh Roast 500. There is a lot of chaff in the inside of this bean until the espresso roast where it seems to be burned out maybe that is normal for all beans. Toward the end of the bag the bean size is getting less consistent and I did get a small pebble jammed in my burr grinder. My wife is still buying roasted beans and we go back and forth so I can guarantee which beans had the pebble but I read another review where they found one in this mixture and caught it before it went into the grinder. I sort my beans a lot more carefully as the cool now to prevent damage. We got lucky and I was able to get the pebble out with out damaging the burr but I wouldn't expect to be that lucky again. Over all I would buy this bean again but I am going to try a few other origins to get a more rounded experience. ... show more

  • We really like this Guatemalan coffee
We really like this Guatemalan coffee. When cooling after roasting it there’s not a lot of “fluff” or “flecks” that come out as with some other brands we’ve tried.

  • Usually LOVE Smokin Beans but....
Two previous orders of Smokin Beans (Columbia Huila and Costa Rica) were wonderful! Unfortunately this batch of Guatemala is pretty much substandard. Beans run from tiny and misshapen to large, and every size in between. This makes even roasting at home pretty much impossible. Also, today I found a small pebble in a batch I had just roasted. That would have destroyed my expensive burr grinder. Flavor is only so-so. Beans roast super quickly probably because the smallest beans crack so quickly while the large beans stay essentially unroasted and have to be picked out and discarded by hand. Disappointing AND I still have 3 pounds to go. ... show more
