  • Solid performance for low price
Size: 3x21in
I used the Ur-Excellent 3 X 21 sanding belts (80 and 120 Grit) from the TPMax Store for sanding construction-grade lumber. The belts performed better than I expected on softwoods like pine and Douglas Fir. The 80 Grit was particularly effective and durable. Compared to the 80 Grit, the 120 Grit clogged up much faster with wood particles. The 120 Grit required constant brushing to clear debris from the belt. However, this is positive since it indicates the finer Grit was still effectively sanding despite prolonged use. A word of caution: While using the 120 Grit, take frequent breaks to brush off sawdust and let the belt cool. Once the fine 120 Grit sawdust is overheated, it fuses with the belt and clogs the sandpaper, making the belt less effective. I would recommend rotating two 120 Grit belts: when one gets hot, switch to a cool belt, and when the second belt becomes hot, rotate back to the first belt. For comparison, I used similarly priced 3 X 21 sanding belts from Faoyoon (same Grit, 80 & 120). The Ur-Excellent belts lasted approximately 33% longer per belt than the Faoyoon under identical conditions. Unlike other reviewers, none of my Ur-Excellent belts broke during use; the seams were not perfect but performed effectively under prolonged use. ... show more

  • Affordable value for 4x24 belt assortment
Size: 4x24in
The quality/value of sanding belts can be judged both on how long they remain effective while sanding, and on the uniformity per labeled grit, against the cost per unit. These belts compare very favorably on cost (roughly half) vs. another manufacturer whose belts I have previously been using, and the uniformity of grit is near as good as far I can tell with just a visual inspection. However, they definitely don't last as long, but the longevity comparison has been more than half, so they are still an attractive value. I haven't kept good enough data to precisely quantify the value advantage, but if forced to guess I would say they result in a savings of maybe 10 to 20% overall. As a consumable commodity, just expect to use more belts per project than if using premium belts. For context, I'm using them on a Rigid oscillating sander, with hardwoods and BB plywood edges. I have not experienced these belts separating at the joint as other reviewers have mentioned, but even premium belts that sat for over a year have separated on me relatively quickly when put to use (I had two from the same batch do that). Neither resulted in damage to my oscillating sander, and I was able to fasten those two belts back together for full functionality with a Tyvek patch cut from a mailing envelope, adhered with ordinary Elmer's glue (in place of the original joining tape), so for me any future belt separation would be inconvenient, but not a big worry. Perhaps reviewer's whose belts separated had received belts that had aged in a warehouse too long? And perhaps machine damage is a bigger issue depending on type of machine. Obviously, that's speculation, just things to think about. In my own experience I've worn out three of these particular 4x24 belts so far with no separations, and I consider the value they offer to be above average. The grit range (80, 120, 150) matches what I use most, they fit my oscillating sander perfectly, and none had problems tracking. ... show more
