I recently purchased the 6-inch steel tongue drum and I’m quite pleased with it. The drum has fewer notes compared to larger models, but it’s an affordable and fantastic way to explore tongue drums. The craftsmanship is impressive, and the green finish is aesthetically pleasing. The drum comes with all the essentials: two drumsticks, a carry bag, and even some extra stickers. The included music book is a nice touch, though I found the numbering system a bit confusing (my background is piano). Despite these minor issues, the drum itself produces a rich, beautiful sound. The accessories are solid and well-made. The drum’s compact size makes it easy to display and carry around. Overall, it’s a great value for the price. The media could not be loaded. I already own a moderately priced 12 inch diameter steel tongue drum that I purchased. This small drum has fewer notes but as it is at a lower cost, it might be the best way to explore one’s interest in tongue drums. For me, this small drum serves as an adjunct to my existing drum. It provides me with 8 additional notes of sound that begin at about an octave higher than the top note of my larger drum, thus using the two drum together I have about 3 octaves of range. This small green drum is really well made and I like the color and finish much better than my larger black drum. This small 6 inch drum comes with all needed accessories, such as two drumsticks and finger tip strikers, and attached foot knobs, and carry bag and plastic piece that I haven’t figured out the use of. This package includes a book of sheet music written up in tablature. If you’ve learned any Chinese instruments you’ll recognize the tab system used. If not, the tablature notation is fairly straightforward intuitive. All tongues precut in the drum top to make individual tones are labeled. As the tab sheets indicate, #1 = the note “B”. The tongue are from numbers #1 to 8. With the two drums side by side I can play tab # 1 on my larger drum and then strike the #1 on this small green six inch drum and that #1 will be in tune only several octaves higher. Note, all accessories are sized for a child. The drum mallets can be used by an adult, but I think many adults will feel that a slightly larger and longer drum stick for the mallets will feel better. The small investment needed makes this a perfect way to introduce music to a child or for that matter to an adult. If you are an adult and find that you really like this, you can later buy are larger diameter tongue and this little one me an adjunct providing either a higher register of tones and/or an additional voice. This little set includes something I did not get with my larger drum, which is the small music booklet which really is a great help. You can find tutorials and some tabs on youtube specifically for tongue drums. This is a good little buy. In the short video. I've never played a steel tongue drum before, but I have a musical background, so I'm looking at this as an experienced musician, new to this instrument. Looking at the included accessories, it comes with a good set. To get a good tone, you need a good strike on the drum, so the included mallets work well, as do the 4 little finger bands you can put on your fingers and "thump" the notes with. There is a really soft case, a songbook, and additional number stickers. There is also a weird "C" shaped thing. In the pictures it is being used as a mallet holder, but it seems to be a very specific shape for if all it needs to do is keep mallets from rolling off the table. Playing the drum is not difficult, especially with the stickers telling you the notes. You just strike the "keys' to play. I found striking them at their base (where the shapes are not cut out) gave the clearest tone. My biggest complaint might be common to all steel tongue drums that are this size and style. The lowest few notes sound clear as a bell. Starting with note "4", those notes start having harmonic ringing that increases as the pitch increases. By the time you get to "7" and "high 1(?)" it's hard to hear the true intended note. I figure this is due to physics of sound, and may be unavoidable, but it keeps me from wanting to try to use it in any music. If there are only 4 or 5 notes I can trust, that's pretty limiting. I also don't like that it's only the notes of the C major scale (with no sharps or flats) but they probably can't fit more notes anywhere on a steel drum this size. I think this drum is ok for what it is, but I won't be using it as much as I was hoping. ... show more
